It would be helpful to have the system identify duplicates by more than just the same email prior to uploading the contacts. I would like to approve or decline merging the contact records.
It would be helpful to have this happen at the time of the import NOT after the fact using the find duplicates link you provided below. I know that it can be done because it doesn't allow you to import a contact with the same email. So it shouldn't allow you to upload someone with the same phone number or at the time of import indicate that it is a duplicate and ask you to continue or delete said contact. Your current soluation is an unnecessary extra step. This can be time-consumming depending on the amount of imports you have.
